Updates
Every update so far.
Early access means updates: new tools and fixes keep coming, and they're yours. Toolyn checks for a new version once a day and shows a small “Update available” note when there is one. Newest first.
0.2.0-beta.2
- Early access license. Toolyn opens on an activation screen until the license key from your purchase email is activated: paste it and press Activate (or Buy Toolyn — 9 early access, Lost your key?, Report a bug). Activation goes online once, sending only the key and an anonymous id of this PC (a hash of Windows' MachineGuid); after that Toolyn works offline. It confirms the license in the background at most once a week; after 14 days without reaching toolyn.app a quiet banner asks to connect once, and after 30 days the tools wait until one check gets through. Your files are never touched. Files opened from Explorer while Toolyn isn't activated open nothing yet; the screen says to activate first.
- License & updates (from the F1 sheet, or search "license"): your plan and how many PCs use it, Check now, the key (masked, with Copy) and Deactivate this PC, which asks first and frees the seat for another PC. The key and activation are kept in
%APPDATA%\Toolyn\license.json, sealed with Windows' DPAPI for your user account. - Update check. Ten seconds after it starts and then once a day, Toolyn asks toolyn.app/version.json for the latest version number; the request names Toolyn's version and sends nothing else. A newer version shows Update available — <version> in the title bar; click it for what's new and Download update, which opens the installer's download in your browser. The first start after updating shows What's new once. Turn it off with Check for updates on the License & updates sheet.
- Links, "Show in folder" and opening folders go to the right place again. They used to open the Documents folder instead, for example Report a bug or a converted file's folder.
0.2.0-beta.1
- Toolcase is now Toolyn. Same app, new name: your settings, recovered work and projects move over by themselves. It has a new logo too: three blades of a multi-tool fanned out on the red key, in the window, the taskbar, Explorer and the installer. The program is
toolyn.exeand the downloads areToolyn-<version>-setup-x64.exeandToolyn-windows-x64.zip. The installer upgrades an installed Toolcase in place and takes its shortcuts, file types and "Open with" entries away. The first start renames%APPDATA%\Toolcaseand%LOCALAPPDATA%\ToolcasetoToolyn(if an old Toolcase still has them open, it tries again at the next start); projects inVideos\Toolcase ProjectsandVideos\Toolcase Demosstay listed, and new ones go to the Toolyn folders.
Feedback1 change
- Report a bug… and Request a feature… at the foot of the shortcuts sheet (F1 or the ? in the title bar) open toolyn.app's feedback page in your browser, with Toolyn's version and Windows' version ("Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100)") filled in. Nothing else is sent: no files, no logs.
Home dashboard8 changes
- The library's overview starts with a dashboard of cards above the drop card and the categories, which all stay as they were: the Clock (the time in large numbers, the date, the greeting, and up to two other cities), To-do, Weather, this month's Calendar and This PC.
- To-do: type and press Enter to add one, tick it off, star it to list it first today, right-click to move it or remove it. Done ones fold under "3 done", with Clear done.
- Weather is off until you turn it on and type a city, and says so first: it is the only part of the dashboard that goes online, asking Open-Meteo for the forecast with only the city name (no account or key). It shows the temperature now, the sky, today's high and low and the next days, refreshes at most every 30 minutes while it shows, and keeps the last forecast with when it came ("Updated 12 min ago", or "Offline" when it couldn't refresh). °C or °F follows Windows until you pick one.
- This PC shows how busy the processor is, memory in use, free space on the system drive and the battery when there is one, read every 2 seconds and only while the library shows.
- Notes (a scratchpad that keeps what you type) and Timer (25-minute focus sessions with 5-minute breaks, or a countdown) are there to turn on. The timer keeps counting while you use other tools, and a toast says when it ends.
- Customize turns each widget on or off, moves them up or down, sets the temperature unit, the weather's city and the other cities on the clock, or hides the dashboard; Show dashboard brings it back. To-dos, notes and the layout are kept between launches.
- Typing in a to-do or the notes stays there: it no longer starts a search.
--screenshot <dir> --customizecaptures the library with Customize open; screenshots show a fixed 9:41 with sample to-dos and weather, and go online for nothing.
New: Video Editor22 changes
- Drop videos, photos and music (or press New project) and cut them together on a magnetic main track, with music on its own track below, then export one MP4. Projects save themselves a second after every change and reopen where you left off. When a save fails (a read-only file, or one a sync app holds), it tries again every few seconds, and closing the project, opening another or starting a new one asks first (Try again · Close without saving · Keep working). An MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or M4V video opened with Toolyn starts a project with it (other videos open in Video Converter), and a project file opens in it too; dropped on the library, Edit in Video Editor leads what Toolyn offers to do with it. When FFmpeg is missing, Install FFmpeg installs it through Video Converter, as every tool does.
- Drag a clip's edge to trim it while the monitor shows the frame at that edge; split with Ctrl+B; delete left or right of the playhead with Q and W; delete and close the gap with Shift+Delete; close gaps; cut, copy, paste and duplicate; select several clips with Ctrl-click or a box; right-click clips, empty lanes and library tiles for their actions; snapping (N, even mid-drag) and the magnetic main track (P); 200 steps of undo. More > Keyboard shortcuts lists every key.
- Shapes 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 21:9 or the first video's own, 720p to 4K, 24 to 60 fps, with a black, colored, blurred or photo background; picture and sound fades from the clip's corners, clip volume, a whole track's volume and mute from its header, "Fit to video end" for music, and a fade from and to black for the whole video. Times read as minutes and seconds with the frame apart ("0:05 12f").
- Exports MP4 with colors that match in every player, using the PC's own video encoder when it has one; Copy file puts the video on the clipboard, and Ctrl+Shift+C copies the current frame as a picture. A moved file shows as offline and Find… relinks it (and the other missing files in that folder).
- Add text with T, Add text, or one of the Text tab's ready-made styles (Plain, Title, Outline, Shadow, Box, Lower third, Caption, Quote, Label, and Handwritten when Segoe Script is installed). Pick any installed font from a list that shows each one in its own face, and set the size, bold, italic, alignment, color, letter and line spacing, an outline, a shadow and a background box (one block or one per line). Save a look as your own style. Emoji show in color, and Arabic, Persian and Hebrew read right to left. Double-click text on the monitor to edit its words. New text opens with its words selected, so you can type straight over them.
- Put videos, photos and PNG logos (transparency kept) on tracks above the main one, for picture in picture and logos. Drop them above the top track to get a new one. On the monitor, drag a picture to move it, pull a corner to scale it or the knob to turn it, with guides at the center and the edges. The arrow keys nudge it a pixel (Shift: ten) while the pointer is on the monitor. Right-click it for Fit, Fill, Stretch, Reset, Bring forward and Send back. The inspector has rows for position, scale, rotation and opacity.
- Keep in sync (on for new projects; the chain key in the timeline toolbar): text, overlays and music stay with the main clip they were placed over when you move, trim, split or delete it. Deleting a main clip also removes what lay entirely over it ("Also removed 1 clip on other tracks"), and a song that runs on past it stays where it is.
- Detach audio moves a video's sound to a track of its own. The two move, trim, split and delete together until you choose Unlink. A detached sound stays a sound clip (pink, with its waveform, on a SOUND track right under the main track) after you move, trim, split, paste or unlink it, and its inspector page has only sound settings.
- Under the monitor, safe zones (title safe, the phone apps' buttons on 9:16 videos, rule of thirds, each named on the picture) and preview zoom (Fit, 50, 100 or 200 percent; scroll to look around). Clicking the picture now selects the clip under the pointer; Space still plays and pauses. The timeline scrolls to show the track of a clip you add or pick.
- Add Text to Video and Add Music, in search and on the editor's card, open your project with its Text or Audio tab showing; with no project open, the next one you open or start does.
- Change a clip's speed from 0.1x to 100x (quick picks 0.25x to 8x on its Speed tab), with Keep pitch so voices sound natural; the clip keeps the same stretch of the file and shows its speed on the timeline. Very fast clips preview smoothly from a copy made in the background.
- Reverse plays a video backwards, sound included (the reversed copy is made in the background, and switching back is instant); exporting a project whose reversed copy isn't made yet reverses it first, with its own progress in the Export dialog. Freeze frame holds the frame under the playhead for 3 seconds and pushes the rest along.
- Crop on the monitor, free or square, 16:9, 9:16 or 4:5; turn pictures in quarter turns, mirror them or turn them upside down; give a main clip its own background (black, a color or blurred) and Apply to all.
- Dissolve, Dip to black and Dip to white between touching clips, from 0.1 to 2 seconds: drag one from the new Transitions tab onto a cut, click one for the cut nearest the playhead, right-click a clip for Dissolve into the next clip, or Apply to all cuts (the button names the kind picked last, "Dip to black on all cuts"). A video's sound (and a detached sound) crossfades with it; right-click a sound clip for Crossfade into the next clip.
- Proxies for 4K, HEVC, 10-bit and HDR files make previews smooth (Use proxies, or right-click a file for Make a proxy); exports always use the original files. Preview quality Auto, Full, Half or Quarter, and a badge when playback drops frames. iPhone and Android HDR video now looks natural instead of washed out, in the preview and the export.
- Automatic captions on the PC. The new Captions tab listens to speech clips, everything or the selected clips (in a language you pick, or detected), and cuts the words into captions of one word, two or three, or a sentence, on one or two lines. Pick a bold look (outline, spoken word, yellow box, black box…), its place and size, and light up each word as it is said. Captions need FFmpeg's full build and a speech model, which Transcribe installs; Import SRT works without them, also for SRT files saved as UTF-16 or Windows-1252.
- Edit captions as a list that shows whole captions: fix the words (their timings stay), merge or split lines, find and replace, and "Cut these lines from the video" takes their stretch out of the main track (with linked sound, the captions, and what is kept in sync) in one step. Changing Words per caption, Lines or Letters per line regroups them at once. Save .srt (never over a captions file already there), and choose Burn in, Save .srt or Off when exporting.
- Clean up a clip's sound: This is speech, Reduce noise, Clean up voice, Normalize to about -14 LUFS and voice effects (Deep, High, Telephone, Echo, Robot). A music track can lower itself under speech by the dB you choose, and the export can normalize the whole video to -14 LUFS with peaks under -1 dB (it says when that couldn't be done).
- Remove pauses finds the silences while someone speaks and lists them first ("Remove 12 pauses (saves 0:41)"; click a pause's time to go there); photos, titles and clips that aren't speech are never cut. Split scenes splits a video where the shot changes, with a tick box for each cut it found ("Split at 14 scene changes").
- Record a voice-over with a 3-2-1 count-in while the timeline plays, with an input meter; the take lands in sync on a Voice track, where playing really began. It stops with playback: Space, Esc, the end of the timeline, moving the playhead, or clicking the REC light on the monitor. Text to speech makes a voice-over at the playhead from a Windows voice, with captions from its words if you like.
- Edit in Video Editor on Demo Recorder's exported video, Record Screen's finished recording, Camera's videos (right-click one in the gallery) and Text to Speech's saved file puts it in the open project (a video at the end of the main track, a sound at the playhead), or starts a new one.
- Text to Speech's Save shows the saved file in a result card (Show in folder, Open, Edit in Video Editor) instead of opening File Explorer. The card goes when you edit the text, open another document or read aloud again.
Audio Studio46 changes
- The project's sample rate now follows the first file you open or import (8–192 kHz). Files at another rate are converted once, with a notice, and audio you don't change exports bit for bit: trim a 44.1 kHz 16-bit WAV and every other sample comes back identical.
- Mono recordings and mono imports stay mono, and 16-bit audio stays 16-bit, so they take half the memory and disk they used to.
- Undo keeps the last 100 steps at almost no memory cost, and the Undo and Redo tooltips name the step ("Undo · Normalize · Ctrl+Z").
- Cut, paste, split, trim, duplicate, amplify, normalize, fades, reverse, invert and silence no longer copy audio, and audio copied in a project at another sample rate is converted when you paste it. Invert (flip polarity) is a new effect.
- Projects use a new file format; projects from earlier versions still open, with overlapping clips moved to a new track named "… (overlap)" so they sound the same.
- Waveforms show the average loudness as a lighter band inside the peaks, like Audacity, and stay smooth while playing or scrolling a project with many tracks. Closing Toolyn with an unsaved audio project stops playback or recording (the take is kept) and then asks whether to save; if a save or export is still running, the prompt says so and waits for it.
- Playback now streams from the cursor or selection and starts at once at any project length. Volume, pan, mute, solo and edits are heard while it plays, and you can keep editing during playback.
- Drag in the ruler's top band to set a loop region, and turn on Loop to play round it (or round the selection); click inside the region, or right-click the band, to clear it. The loop region is saved with the project and isn't an undo step. Click the ruler to jump there, and drag the playhead's flag to scrub.
- The view follows the playhead a page at a time or keeps it pinned at 40% (right-click the new follow button, or choose in Settings); the button turns following off and back on in the mode it had. Stop returns the cursor to where play started; Settings can turn that off.
- Every track has a live level meter, larger windows show a Master strip under the tracks with the master volume and meter, and the transport meter shows peak, average (RMS) and a clip light for each side that stays on until you click it. On smaller windows the speaker button next to the transport meter opens the master volume, and a badge shows it whenever it isn't 0 dB.
- Devices are listed by their full Windows names with "System default" first, and Settings keeps the list up to date as devices come and go. On the default output, plugging in headphones or connecting a Bluetooth headset moves playback there without stopping, and the status line says where it plays; if a chosen output disappears, playback moves to the default and says so once. Toolyn opens the audio device only while something plays and lets it go 5 seconds after.
- The transport is one row at every window size: the selection's start, end and length sit in the bar from 1,180 pt and in a "Selection · 2.250 s" popover below that. A new Settings dialog (the gear in the header, or Project → Settings…) holds the playback device, follow mode and what Stop does.
- Recording now runs on the same WASAPI engine as playback, and the take is written to disk as it records (a WAV that becomes RF64 past 4 GB), so nothing is lost if Toolyn closes; a take is limited only by the project's room and the disk. Takes are recorded in 32-bit float, and the Record tab and the status line say how much recording time fits on the disk. When the disk is almost full, recording stops by itself and keeps the take.
- "Play other tracks while recording" is on by default, so every recording is an overdub that lines up with what you heard, using the device clocks. Measure latency (Record tab or Settings, Recording) plays eight clicks and records them, and stores the delay the clocks don't show for each output and microphone pair; you can also type it. The Record key always reads Record.
- Choose which inputs a take records: Input 1 or Input 2 as a mono take, Inputs 1+2 as a stereo take, or both mixed to mono (the old Mono/Stereo choice carries over as Input 1 or Inputs 1+2). Check level opens the microphone without recording and shows both inputs with a green target zone (−18 to −6 dB), held peaks, clip lights and plain advice; if only the other input has sound, it offers to switch. A link opens Windows' sound settings for the microphone's volume.
- "Hear the input" plays the microphone through the output while recording (about 30–40 ms late), with a reminder to use headphones. Recording from a Bluetooth headset's hands-free microphone, or overdubbing on Bluetooth headphones, shows a note about call quality or delay.
- If the microphone is unplugged while recording, recording stops and the take is kept; a chosen microphone that isn't connected falls back to the system default with a notice. Settings gains a Recording tab (microphone, channels, latency, recordings folder). The Record tab's meter stays live while recording, and Hear the input can be switched on or off mid-take.
- Select time across tracks: drag down across lanes, Shift+click to extend, click a track's header for all of it (Ctrl+click adds a track), or press Ctrl+A. Click a clip's title to select that clip. Up and Down move a keyboard focus between tracks and Enter selects the focused one.
- A Ripple setting in the toolbar (Off, Selected tracks, All tracks; Selected tracks by default) decides whether Delete, Cut and Paste move the audio after them. Delete now closes the gap across the selected tracks (it used to close it inside the active clip only); Alt+Delete and Cut and leave gap (Ctrl+Alt+X) always leave a gap, and with All tracks every track loses or gains the same time, so all tracks and labels stay in sync. Emptied tracks now stay, as in Audacity.
- Audacity's editing commands: Silence (Ctrl+L), Trim (Ctrl+T), Duplicate (Ctrl+D), Split (Ctrl+I), Split to a new track (Ctrl+Alt+I), Join (Ctrl+J), Detach at silences (Ctrl+Alt+J), Repeat last effect (Ctrl+R) and Move edges to zero crossings (Z); Paste goes into the focused track and the tracks below it. A new Tracks menu mixes and renders tracks (into one, or to a new track), converts stereo to mono, splits a stereo track (copying no audio), makes a stereo track from two mono ones, swaps channels, aligns (Align end to end puts the tracks one after another), sorts and mutes all.
- The toolbar has Project, Edit, Select, Tracks, Effects, Generate and View menus with every shortcut shown (one Menu button on small windows), and every command is in the Ctrl+K palette. Shortcuts follow Audacity: Ctrl+O now opens a file and Ctrl+Shift+I imports; Space plays and stops, Shift+Space loop-plays, X stops where you are, and Shift or Alt versions never trigger the plain key.
- Open a WAV, MP3, FLAC, Ogg, Opus, M4A or AIFF file, edit it and press Ctrl+S to save it back in its own format, sample format, rate and bitrate, with its tags (an Apple Lossless M4A stays lossless). Lossy formats ask once, because each save re-encodes. A muted or silenced track is never saved over the file as silence. Once there is a second track, Save makes a project. Export again (Ctrl+Alt+E) writes the last export again.
- Drop audio files on a track to place them there at that time (more files go on the tracks below), or anywhere else to add new tracks at the cursor. Shift+wheel or a sideways swipe scrolls time, Ctrl+wheel and pinch zoom around the pointer, the middle button drags the view, and a strip above the ruler shows the whole project while zoomed in. At 900 × 600 the studio shows two full tracks: the side panel slides over the timeline below 1,180 pt and track headers narrow to 150 pt. Settings gains an Editing tab.
- Clips are edited where you point, with no tool modes: drag a clip's top corner knobs to fade it in or out (right-click a knob for Linear, Equal power, S-curve, Logarithmic or Exponential), drag an edge to trim it and drag it back out to bring the audio back (a notch shows there is some), and drag the knob in its middle for clip gain from −∞ to +24 dB (a badge on the title shows it). Double-click a title to rename the clip; Ctrl+click titles to pick several and drag them together.
- Right-click a clip, or press Shift+F10, for Rename, Split here, Join with next, Duplicate, Fade shape, Reset gain, Reverse, Remove, Move to new track and Properties.
- A clip you move, paste or trim over another now gets a short crossfade: the clip underneath is trimmed (its audio stays, for Undo or for dragging its edge back) but keeps 10 ms under the new clip where it has audio there, played as an equal-power crossfade (0–50 ms in Settings, Editing). Effects, Crossfade clips widens the crossfade to the selection, and Join keeps the sound of a crossfade.
- Every track has a volume envelope: turn it on with the button in the track's header, click the line to add a point, drag points to shape it (Shift moves one only up or down), double-click or press Delete to remove one, and right-click for Reset envelope. It plays, exports and mixes down, and its points move with the audio.
- Tracks have colors (bubblegum, Bondi blue, lime, blueberry, lemon, tangerine; new tracks take the next one) and heights (collapsed, normal or tall from the track's menu, or drag the lane's bottom edge). The track menu also duplicates, moves up or down and deletes the track, and "+" by the track count adds a mono or stereo track.
- The side panel's Clip tab is now Edit, and the side panel opens on it once there is audio: the selected clip first (its gain and fade lengths and curves, then where it sits and what it plays), then the selection. Gain and fades use a new control you can drag (Shift for fine steps), double-click for its default, step with the arrow keys or type into ("−18", "120ms"). Properties in the clip menu scrolls the clip into view beside the panel.
- Change Volume and Reverse Audio, in search and on Audio Studio's card, open the Amplify or Reverse editor in the Effects tab; nothing changes until Apply.
- Projects can be six hours long (it was 30 minutes) with up to 4,096 clips, and the ruler counts in hours past the first one. Long files are read from disk as they play instead of being loaded into memory, so a two-hour project opens at once and keeps only a few MB of its audio in RAM. Start, End and Length fields read h:mm:ss.mmm past the first hour and take either seconds or h:mm:ss when typed.
- Imports go to a cache folder in their own format (16-bit stays 16-bit, mono stays mono), with a progress bar and no length limit but the timeline's; FFmpeg imports are decoded straight to disk. Big effect and mix results go there too. The cache is removed when Toolyn closes, and what a crashed session left behind is cleaned up next time.
- Recordings are no longer limited by memory: a take keeps only its last seconds in memory while it records, and plays from its file once it stops. If a recording's file can't be finished (a full disk), the take keeps its last seconds in memory instead of losing them.
- Free space is checked before importing, saving and exporting (Toolyn leaves 512 MB free), with a message that says how much can be used on that drive. If the disk can't keep up during playback, a moment plays as silence and the studio says so; a file that can't be read (a removed drive) shows a message instead of crashing. The status line shows the project's size and how much of it is in the cache.
- Settings gains Files (the cache folder and its size, Empty cache, read-ahead memory, the recordings folder and its size) and Helpers (where FFmpeg was found, what it can write and whether it has Rubber Band, or a Needs FFmpeg callout with Install FFmpeg, Get it, Locate… and Check again).
- Saving a project again writes only the audio that is new since the last save ("Project saved · 12 MB written"), so saving a long project takes about as long as the edits did, and a crash or power cut during a save never damages the last saved version. Project, Compact project takes back the space of audio no version uses any more (it clears undo history), and Toolyn compacts by itself on closing when unused audio is over half the file and over 256 MB, and the audio still in use is at most 1 GB. Save project as writes a fresh copy, and undo keeps working.
- Every change is kept in a journal on disk a couple of seconds after you make it, so nothing is lost if Toolyn or Windows stops: the next start shows "Restore unsaved project · 14 edits · 2:10:33" in the empty state (or above an open project) before anything is cleaned up, with Restore and Discard, and Discard asks first and says how much space came back. A recovery whose recordings were deleted brings back everything else, with the missing parts silent and named. Closing Toolyn with unsaved changes keeps them the same way instead of writing a whole copy, unless you choose Quit without saving.
- Project, Recover takes (also in the Record tab) lists the recordings no project uses, with their length, size and age, to import them or move them to the Recycle Bin; projects older versions kept on exit are listed there too, with Open. After a save, Audio Studio offers to move the takes the project file now holds to the Recycle Bin.
- Undo history now has a disk budget: audio only undo still needs stays in the cache up to the undo disk space in Settings, Files (4 GB, and never more than a quarter of the free space), and past it the oldest steps go, with "Older undo steps cleared · 3.1 GB of disk freed" in the status line.
- Settings, Files also sets the rate new projects start at and can keep a backup when saving back to an audio file (the file as it was before your first save, beside it as interview.backup.wav). Saving back now asks first when another program changed the file since you opened it.
- A new Effects tab lists every effect by group (Volume & compression, Fades, EQ & filters, Noise & repair, Special) with Find an effect (Enter opens the first match), Favorites (the star in an editor) and the last five you used. It replaces the Cleanup tab; Noise reduction and Clean up voice are in Noise & repair.
- Each effect opens in an editor with what it does, a graph where it helps (EQ response, the compressor's curve with a live gain-reduction bar, the fade's shape), its settings, factory presets and your own (Save preset…; Delete preset removes only that one), and a line saying what it applies to: the selected time on the selected tracks, else the clips you picked, else the whole focused track. Apply is one undo step named after the effect, and Ctrl+R applies the last effect again with the same settings.
- Preview loops what the effect applies to: filters, EQs, dynamics, Amplify, Normalize, Loudness normalization and Remove DC play live, so every drag is heard at once (the last three measure the audio once first), and Compare plays the audio as it is; the others (fades, Studio fade out, noise reduction) work out only the seconds you hear (3–15 s, Settings, Effects), so they start quickly even on long selections. What you hear in a live preview is exactly what Apply writes, and the transport says which effect is previewing.
- New and rebuilt effects: Amplify (shows the new peak), Normalize (each track or all together, each stereo side on its own, DC removal), Loudness normalization (LUFS or RMS, each track or the mix, with a true-peak ceiling), Compressor (following peaks or the average level, with the stereo sides linked or on their own), Limiter (true peak), Noise gate, Adjustable fade, Studio fade out, Bass & Treble, a 10-band Graphic EQ, a Filter curve EQ with up to eight bands you drag on the graph, High-pass and Low-pass from 6 to 48 dB per octave, Notch, Shelf, Repeat and Remove DC. Fades take a curve. Normalize, Amplify's new peak and Loudness's ceiling count the clip's own gain. Long selections are processed block by block, and big results go straight to the cache folder.
- A drawer under the tracks (its button at the toolbar's right, or View) holds the undo history: every step, newest first, the current one marked; click a step to go back or forward to it, and Clear undo history (it asks first) frees what only undo kept. Graph editors expand into the drawer at full width, and on small windows Expand moves the editor out of the side panel into the drawer and back. On windows under 720 pt tall the drawer slides over the lanes instead.
- While an effect editor is open, its Apply is the page's main button and Record turns into a plain key with its red dot.
PDF Editor37 changes
- Two bars instead of four. The document bar holds the menus (File, Edit, View, Pages, Document, Tools, Help), the open documents as tabs, undo, Find and Save. The tool bar holds Select and Hand, your quick tools, the modes and their tools, and the look of the current tool or selected mark (color, width, opacity, font) at the right. About 90 pt more of the page shows, and on short windows the status bar hides while the page controls float on the page.
- Tools come in modes: Markup (highlight and pen together), Fill & Sign, Edit, Pages and Protect. Each mode comes back to the tool you used last in it (Edit starts on Edit text), tools that share a button remember the last one, and right-clicking a tool pins it to the quick tools that stay in every mode. On a Surface Laptop's narrower window the modes show as icons of their own.
- A left rail opens Pages (with a thumbnail size and a "+" between pages to insert one), Bookmarks and Search, which lists every match with the words around it, with Match case and Whole words. The right panel (Ctrl+E) has Properties (the tool, the selected mark, the document's title and author, the page, preferences) and Comments, with Hide all markup, which stays when a file reopens or reloads. Properties docks beside the page wherever it fits, the left panel stepping aside, instead of covering it.
- Selecting text shows a small bar to highlight, underline, strike out, copy, add a note or mark it for redaction. Ctrl+C copies selected text again, Ctrl+A selects all the text, and holding Space gives the Hand with any tool.
- Keyboard shortcuts follow Acrobat: Ctrl+0 fit page (it was fit width), Ctrl+1 actual size, Ctrl+2 fit width, Ctrl+3 fit visible, Ctrl+Shift+S save a copy, Ctrl+E properties, F4 left panel (it was Ctrl+B), F3 next match, Ctrl+G go to page, Ctrl+D duplicate, Ctrl+Tab next document, and the arrow keys move the selected mark. Help > Keyboard shortcuts lists them all, and single-key tool shortcuts can be turned off.
- Saving can't damage your file anymore. Toolyn writes a hidden copy next to it, checks that it opens with every page, then swaps it in. If anything fails, the original stays as it was and a note says why; if Windows stops halfway through replacing it (an antivirus or OneDrive holding the file), Toolyn puts the original back, or keeps both files and says where they are. A saved file keeps its creation date, OneDrive version history and download mark. The status bar shows how far a save is, and Cancel stops it safely.
- Password-protected PDFs keep their password and permissions when you save them, also with Save optimized, page numbers, a watermark or text recognition. Document > Remove password takes it off. New encryption keys come from Windows' secure random generator.
- Closing a tab or Toolyn with unsaved changes asks whether to save them first, and goes on after any follow-up question (keep the password, changed on disk, open in another app). Enter picks the default button in these questions.
- Toolyn notices when another app or OneDrive changes an open PDF, both when you come back to the window and before saving, and never writes over those changes without asking. Changes made while Reload, page numbers, a watermark, flattening or text recognition run are kept: a result that would overwrite them opens in a new tab.
- New File > Save a copy… and Save optimized…. A PDF that's open in another app offers to save a copy. A file Toolyn can show but not rewrite opens view only, with Save a copy as page images, and can still be exported as images or text and converted to Word.
- Ctrl+P opens Toolyn's own Print dialog. Pick the printer and its settings, the number of copies, and the pages: all of them, the current page, the pages selected in the Pages panel or Pages mode, or a range like 1-5, 8. You can also choose whether comments and form fields print, Fit, Actual size or Shrink, whether pages turn to match the paper, and 300 or 150 dpi. A preview shows the first page on its paper. The dialog fits a 900 × 600 window and keeps its keys (Esc closes it, Enter prints); with no printer set up it offers "Add a printer…" and finds the printer when you come back.
- Pages are printed and sent one at a time, so a 1,000-page file prints without filling the memory. The status bar reads "Printing page 340 of 1,000", with Cancel. As in Acrobat, marks that aren't set to print (note icons, form buttons, hidden marks) stay off the paper.
- Long documents use less memory. Thumbnails, page pictures and page text are kept within limits, tabs in the background keep only what was on screen, and closing a tab frees everything it held. Search and "Find and redact" go through long documents page by page, and "Find and redact" stops, and says so, when another PDF comes to the front.
- Opening a file never freezes the window. The tab appears as soon as the pages can be shown, and comments, form fields and bookmarks follow a moment later ("Reading comments and forms…"). A big file, or one OneDrive is still downloading, shows how far it got, then "Preparing the pages…", with Cancel; on the start page each opening file has its own ×, and a cancelled file opens again when you ask.
- Each open PDF is read once, by a worker of its own. A file over 64 MB is only read in full when you edit or save it, and saving builds on that read instead of reading the file again. Editing a line of text previews just that page, so it stays quick in long documents.
- The status bar shows long work (opening, saving, printing, text recognition, exporting pages as images) in a pill with how far it is and Cancel.
- The start page offers "Reopen 3 PDFs from last time" (hover it to see every file, with its folder) and lists every PDF job. "Open PDFs with Toolyn", in Properties > Preferences, sets Toolyn up as a PDF app and opens Windows Settings to make it the default.
- Fill & Sign opens at the first form field. A saved setting Toolyn can't read no longer resets the others, so your saved signatures stay.
- Add Watermark, Add Page Numbers and Rotate PDF, in search and on the PDF Editor's card, open the editor at that job: the watermark or page number dialog, or Pages mode with every page picked and a line saying how to turn them. With no PDF open, the start page asks for one and opens the job with it.
- If Toolyn closes or crashes with unsaved PDFs, your changes are kept. Opening such a file again (from Explorer, Recent PDFs or Reopen) brings them back, a file that was already open offers them in a note above the page, and File > Recovered changes and the start page list the rest. Changes are kept two seconds after you stop editing, and new PDFs that were never saved are kept too. Discarding kept changes asks first, since they can't be brought back.
- Restoring a password-protected PDF asks for its password, and changes to such a file are kept sealed for your Windows account, so typed comments never sit on disk in plain text. If the file changed since, Toolyn asks before putting your changes back on it.
- Every mark you add carries your name, when it was made and changed, and a name of its own, as Acrobat's marks do. Set "Your name for comments" in Properties > Preferences; until then it is your Windows user name.
- Deleting a comment that was already in the file also removes its pop-up, and a copy made with Ctrl+D is a mark of its own. Saving a PDF no longer drops annotations made by other apps when its comment list has empty or broken entries, and flattening such a file keeps its links.
- When you only add marks, fill in fields, edit text or change the title, Save adds your changes to the end of the file and leaves the rest exactly as it was, as Acrobat does. Digital signatures stay valid, and a password-protected file keeps its password and its encryption.
- Signed and certified PDFs follow their rules. A note above the page says who signed or certified the file (both can be hidden; the name's badge stays), and a certified file turns off the tools, modes and comment edits its author didn't allow. Saving a change that would break a signature asks first and offers to save a copy instead, also after OCR, page numbers, a watermark, flattening or smaller pictures.
- Bookmarks, named destinations and links now survive moving, inserting, deleting and extracting pages. Only bookmarks to deleted pages go, and links to them open the nearest page that is left.
- Text recognition, page numbers, watermarks, flattening and the new Document > Make pictures smaller are one undo step now. On a file over 150 MB, Toolyn asks before letting go of an earlier step. Document > Save a smaller copy… opens the file in Compress PDF.
- New preference "Save changes automatically". When it is on, your changes are added to the file 3 seconds after you stop editing, and the document bar says "Saved automatically 14:02". When a file has to be saved by hand (signed, certified, or a change that rewrites the whole file), the bar says "autosave paused" and its hover says why. Turning a page whose rotation comes from the file's page tree is saved correctly.
- Marks made in Acrobat, Edge, Chrome, Drawboard or an earlier session can be selected, moved, resized, restyled, commented on and deleted like your own. Marks you don't change are saved byte for byte, and changed ones keep what other apps stored in them. Marks Toolyn knows only as a box (a stamp with its own look, 3D or sound) can be moved, resized and commented on, and Properties says so.
- Other apps' marks show as they should. Marks meant only for paper stay off the screen and the thumbnails (the Comments list says "Print only"), note icons keep their size at any zoom, and highlights, notes and form fields saved without a look of their own are drawn.
- Fields you fill in are saved with their own look, so every viewer shows them, also in a form another app filled without drawing its fields, and fields merged in from another file show their values. Marks saved without a look get one, and deleting a note also removes its pop-up and the replies to it, never a form field or a link.
- Pens and shapes can be solid, dashed or dotted, lines and arrows take any end (open or closed arrow, circle, square, diamond, slash or bar), and every mark has an opacity.
- Select several marks at once: drag a box around them on the page, Shift- or Ctrl-click to add or take one away, or press Ctrl+A with a mark selected for every mark on the page. Move, nudge (Shift for 10 pt), restyle, arrange, lock or delete them together, as one undo step. With different colors, widths or opacities selected, Properties and the tool bar show "Mixed", and picking any color restyles them all.
- Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V cut, copy and paste marks, also onto another page or into another open PDF (Ctrl+Shift+V pastes in place). Pasted text becomes a text box at the pointer, and a copied picture (Ctrl+V or Edit > Paste) is placed there. A picture dropped on a page lands where it was dropped; dropped on a thumbnail or between two, it becomes a page.
- Right-click a mark for its menu: Properties, Comment, Cut, Copy, Duplicate, Paste to pages… (a stamp on pages 1-20, say), Delete, Arrange (front, back, group, flip), Lock and "Use as default style". Pictures and text boxes turn with a round handle above them.
- New markup tools: Squiggly, Area highlight (and the highlighter highlights a box on scans), Insert text and Replace text, Callout, Typewriter, Polyline, Polygon and Cloud. Shapes can be drawn cloudy, and text boxes get alignment and a border and wrap the same on screen as in the saved file. On a short window a pill over the pages says how to finish a polygon or callout, as their tooltips do.
- The color popover remembers the last 8 colors you finished picking, takes a color typed as #RRGGBB (the custom color is a round dot like the others), and has an eyedropper, with a cursor of its own, that picks a color off the page.
Library14 changes
- A new Capture category holds the tools you start with no file: Screenshot, Record Screen, Demo Recorder, Capture Text, Color Picker, Camera and Capture Web Page. They are still listed where you'd look for them too: recording and Camera under Video, Screenshot and Color Picker under Images, and Capture Text under Text & Speech. Scan Document stays in PDF & Docs and is listed under Capture as well.
- Docs is now called PDF & Docs.
--category docsstill works, and so does--category pdf. - Every category page starts with START HERE, the two or three tools to begin with, as bigger cards; the Video Editor leads the Video page and the PDF Editor the PDF & Docs page. The rest follow in named sections (Edit, Get and inspect and Record on Video; Check, Fix and Switches on System…), and Record Audio, Case Converter, JWT Decoder and Lorem Ipsum have cards of their own.
- The +3 after a tool's job chips is now a button: it lists the other jobs with what each does, each one click away. A card with no room for chips says 2 jobs instead.
- Until you've used a tool, the library's overview suggests where to start: Screenshot, Record Screen, PDF Editor, Video Editor, Image Converter and Merge PDF. The category chips and cards count each page's cards, and All counts every tool once.
- The PDF card is now PDF Editor, with four chips (Edit PDF, Fill & Sign, Organize PDF, Redact PDF); Sign PDF, Annotate PDF and its other jobs are in its list of jobs. Fill & Sign is still found as Fill & Flatten Forms, and Edit PDF and Annotate PDF open the editor's Edit and Markup modes. In the editor, Split and Compress hand the open file to Split PDF and Compress PDF (asking to save changes first). Compress PDF can't keep a file's password, and says so first; File > Save optimized keeps it.
- The Capture page offers to install FFmpeg too when screen recording needs it.
- Overlapping tools are combined, and every job keeps its name as a tab, a chip and a search result: Video Converter now also makes GIFs and stills (Convert · Compress · Resize · GIF · Frames), Trim & Crop Video puts new sound under a video or mutes it (Trim · Crop & Rotate · Speed · Replace sound · Mute), and the PDF Converter turns PDFs into Word documents or images and Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Markdown files into PDFs in one drop (PDF to Word · PDF to Images · To PDF). A Word file dropped on an empty PDF to Word tab switches to To PDF.
- Since 0.1.0, 0.1.0's own tools moved like this:
- Compress PNG and Compress JPG are now Compress Images, the Compress tab of Image Converter.
- Spreadsheet Converter, Presentation Converter, Ebook Converter and CAD Converter are tabs of Document Converter (Documents · Spreadsheets · Presentations · Ebooks · CAD).
- Create Archive, Extract Archive and Archive Converter are now Zip & Unzip Files (Zip · Unzip · Convert).
- Website PNG Screenshot, Website JPG Screenshot and Save Website as PDF are now Capture Web Page (PNG · JPG · PDF).
- New names: PDF Editor (was PDF), PDF Converter (was PDF to Word & Text), Make PDF Searchable (was PDF OCR), Capture Text (was Quick OCR), Scan Document (was Scan & Print) and View & Edit Images (was View & Edit).
- Old tool ids, links, recent files and saved settings keep working:
--tool compress-pngand a recent file Compress JPG made open Image Converter's Compress tab, and what 0.1.0's tools that are tabs now saved (format, output folder, helpers you located by hand) goes to the page that took them in, once, keeping "Next to the originals" where you had picked it. - After the update from 0.1.0, the library's overview says once what moved, naming each tool's old name ("Capture Text (was Quick OCR)"), with Got it.
- A tool's "12× used" now adds up its jobs: opening Compress Images counts for Image Converter too.
- Every tool describes itself in one plain sentence that reads whole on its card at any window size (narrower cards give it a third line), and the last emoji are gone from the tool list. A card with no jobs shows its note whole ("Needs a local AI model"). The PDF Converter's card shows Word to PDF first.
- Image Converter's last tab is Clean details, and the automatic redaction job of Blur & Redact Photos is Cover Faces & Text (it was Redact Images, easy to mix up with Redact Image).
Search5 changes
- Search answers format questions: "mp4 to mp3", "heic to jpg", "jpg to pdf" or "word to pdf" (also asked as "how to convert mp4 to mp3") shows a Best match that opens the right tool on the right tab with that format already chosen (Enter opens it).
- Search understands synonyms, plurals and small typing mistakes: "shrink pdf", "compress videos", "compres pdf", "screen recording", "read aloud", "whatsapp" and "1080p" find the tool for the job. Names rank first, then jobs, descriptions and keywords; the tools you use (counted per job) and what you opened for the same words before come first among equals.
- A link pasted into search offers Download Video, Capture Web Page and Clean Links with the link filled in. Jobs Toolyn leaves out say why ("PDF to Excel isn't offered", "PDF/A isn't offered") and offer the closest tool; words that match no tool offer "Search your files for …" in File Search. Pasted links and words looked for with File Search aren't remembered as searches.
- Old tool names say where they went ("Video to GIF · Now in Video Converter").
- Ctrl+K lists, before you type, the tool's commands, then favorites, recent tools, recent files and every tool in library order (under EVERY TOOL). With words, it shows the best match and one ranked list, including other tools' commands that work from anywhere ("Screenshot › Take screenshot", "PDF Editor › Open PDF…", "Video Editor › New project"). A job that isn't offered leads with what Enter opens ("Try PDF to Word") and says why after it, under its own NOT OFFERED heading.
Opening files11 changes
- Files dropped on the library, or chosen with its Browse…, open a sheet that asks what to do with them: open them (Edit in Video Editor, Edit in PDF Editor, Edit in Audio Studio, See details in Media Info), turn them into another format (one key per format: WebM, MOV, GIF, MP3…; a key that turns pictures into PDFs says it makes one PDF per picture) or run a quick job (Compress Video, Trim Video, Video to GIF, Transcribe). Choosing a format opens the converter with the files added and that format set.
- The sheet puts the tool made for the files first: the Video Editor for an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI or M4V video (Video Converter for several, or for the ones it can't import such as WMV), the PDF Editor for a PDF (Merge PDF for several, or a folder of them), the PDF Converter for a Word document, Unzip Files for a ZIP, Image Converter for several photos or a folder of them, File Search for a folder of mixed files. It learns: your last pick for a kind of file goes on top next time, and several files of one kind put the batch tool first (12 photos → Image Converter, 3 PDFs → Merge PDF). A file with only one way to go still opens at once.
- A mixed drop gets a tab per kind of file ("2 pictures", "1 PDF") at the top of the sheet, so none is out of sight; after a pick the sheet moves on to the next kind and the picked tab gets a check. Picking a format for an MP4 and a MOV together no longer offers MP4 or MOV. The sheet works fully by mouse, and by keyboard: arrows, Enter, typing to filter, Esc.
- Each category page has a drop strip under its header ("Drop a video to see what you can do with it", Browse…).
- One window: opening files with Toolyn while it runs opens them in the window that is already open (three PDFs, three tabs), instead of a second Toolyn; files opened while the sheet is waiting join it instead of replacing it, and files opened while Toolyn is closing open in a new window instead of being lost.
toolyn --choose <files>asks what to do with them. - A file opened with Toolyn from Explorer opens in its viewer or editor (PDF Editor, View & Edit Images, Audio Studio, Text Editor, Video Editor), even when you open several at once. Only a file none of them can show (a WMV video or a HEIC photo, say) opens in a converter.
- The installer's optional "Open with" entry now covers MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and M4V videos too, and Video Editor projects (.tcvideo) open in Toolyn by default, as audio projects do. For PDFs it uses the same file type as the PDF Editor's "Open PDFs with Toolyn", so Toolyn is listed once, and uninstalling also removes what that setting registered.
- A file dropped on a tool that can't use it opens the same sheet, which says why ("Video Converter can't use Lisbon.jpg. What do you want to do instead?"); a file with only one way to go opens where it fits, and a note says so: "clip.mp4 opened in Video Editor. Image Converter takes pictures." The tool you dropped on stays in front, undisturbed, when it took some of the files. While you drag files over an editor, it says whether it can use them. Longer notes stay on screen longer, and float above a tool's bottom bar instead of covering its buttons, page number or zoom.
- A file no tool opens (a .psd, say) shows its checksum in Hash Generator, with a note saying why. README, LICENSE, Makefile and dotfiles such as .gitignore open in the Text Editor.
- Folders can be dropped on Batch Rename (adds the files inside), Storage Explorer (shows what fills it), the converters (add the first 2,000 files they take) and Zip & Unzip Files (unzips the archives inside on its Unzip tab, zips the folder otherwise).
- Dropped photos are only decoded when the tool they go to needs the picture, so dropping many big photos on Image Converter is quicker. The library's drop card ("Drop files and choose what to do with them") and its Browse… take several files at once. Text Editor opens subtitles (.srt, .vtt).
Helper programs and quitting11 changes
- Missing helper programs install from the tool. Install FFmpeg (and LibreOffice, Inkscape, Calibre and FontForge) uses WinGet, and the button says the license, the download and on-disk size, and whether Windows will ask for permission. Toolyn checks for free space first.
- The Video and Audio pages of the library say once when FFmpeg is missing, with Install FFmpeg right there.
- Pointing to a helper (Locate…), finding it (Check again) or installing it on one tool updates every tool and library card at once, and a toast says "FFmpeg is ready."
- Closing Toolyn while files convert, a helper installs, a screen, demo or camera recording runs, a demo or a video exports, or Audio Studio records, saves or exports asks first ("Quit Toolyn?"), with Keep working and Quit anyway. Keep Awake never holds up quitting; the prompt says it stops.
- Transcribe offers Install FFmpeg for FFmpeg's full build (the one that recognizes speech) the same way, with its own size. Install FFmpeg in Record Screen, Demo Recorder and the Video Editor installs it through Video Converter.
- A helper installed while Toolyn runs is found without restarting: Check again (now also on the Video and Audio pages) looks where WinGet and installers put programs.
- Toolyn starts on PCs whose Intel graphics driver crashed it at launch. It now draws with DirectX 12 only, and no longer loads Vulkan or OpenGL drivers just to list them, which let capture tools hook in. Setting
WGPU_BACKENDstill picks one yourself. - Closing Toolyn after the screen turned off or the PC went into standby no longer leaves it stuck in Task Manager: once everything is saved, it ends without waiting for the graphics driver to unload.
- No console window opens beside Toolyn, and
--versionprints in every build. - Cancel and quitting now also stop the helper programs a conversion started (LibreOffice, Calibre, Inkscape…), not only FFmpeg.
- Saving HEIC says what it needs: Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (US$0.99 unless your PC came with it), with links to both.
File tools11 changes
- When a file tool finishes, Continue with offers what usually comes next, one click away with the new files already added: a merged PDF → Compress it, Add a password; a compressed PDF → Add a password, Sign it; videos → Compress them, Edit in Video Editor; pictures → Put them in a PDF; recordings → Edit in Audio Studio, Transcribe it; a Word file → Make a PDF; an unzipped folder → Search inside.
- Files that don't work say why and what to do: "report.pdf is open in Microsoft Word. Close it there, then try again." (Toolyn asks Windows which app has it), "Windows won't let Toolyn save in Program Files. Choose another folder.", "The disk is full.", "This PDF has a password." with Remove the password, "FFmpeg couldn't read this video. It may be damaged or only partly downloaded." A picture, font or archive Toolyn can't read no longer blames FFmpeg, and keeps the reason it couldn't be read; "Wrong password", "This PDF has no password" and protected archives say just that.
- Try again in the bar runs only the files that didn't work. After a run where some files didn't work, the main button runs only the files not saved yet ("Compress 3 files"), so nothing is saved twice, and the result card shows a warning mark instead of the green check.
- Files dropped (or added with Add files…) while a batch runs join the list as "Up next" and run when it is done, instead of being turned away.
- File tools remember every setting of every tab (resize percent, target size, codec, GIF frame rate, noise reduction, OCR language…), not only the format and quality. Passwords, page numbers, trim times, the music or subtitle file and drawn crops are never remembered. Reset at the top of the settings puts a tab back to how it starts.
- Start from offers presets named for what they are for: Email · 20 MB, Discord · 10 MB, WhatsApp · 16 MB and Smallest for Compress Video; Web · 1920 px, Email · 1600 px, Thumbnail and Instagram portrait for Resize Images; Plays everywhere · MP4 H.264, Smaller · MP4 HEVC, For the web · WebM; Podcast voice, Voice memo and Music (gentle) for Clean Up Audio, and more. A preset changes only its own settings, and presets and Reset leave the name and Replace the originals as you set them.
- Save as preset… keeps your own settings under a name (a name you already use asks to replace it); right-click one to rename or delete it (deleting asks first).
- Choose what new files are called: the usual name (with what was done, as before), the name with a word for the job added ("-small", "-rotated", "-clean"), or a pattern with
{name},{n}(the file's place in the list) and{date}. The example under it shows the name as it is saved. - Compressing, resizing, rotating, cleaning photos, blurring faces and compressing PDFs or videos can Replace the originals: each original goes to the Recycle Bin after its new file is saved, and the new file takes its name. It never deletes anything for good: an original the Recycle Bin can't take (too big for it, or on a drive without one) is kept, and so is one whose new file changed format or couldn't take its name. A note says which and why.
- Batch Rename, Beautify Screenshot and Find Duplicates remember their rules, look and folders.
- Compress Video's targets follow today's limits: Discord 10 MB, WhatsApp 16 MB, Email 20 MB.
New: Demo Recorder9 changes
- Record the screen, a window or an area with a microphone, the PC's sound and a camera, then get a polished demo in the spirit of Screen Studio. The pointer isn't recorded; a track of mouse and keyboard input is (keys pressed, never what was typed), so zooms, the pointer, the backdrop and the camera are drawn at preview and export time and stay editable.
- Automatic zooms on clicks and typing that follow the pointer or hold a spot, with their own timeline lane; a spring-smoothed pointer drawn sharp at any size, hidden when still or while typing, with click ripples, circles and sounds.
- Wallpapers, gradients, colors or pictures behind a rounded, padded, shadowed frame with an optional inset and crop, in seven shapes from 16:9 to 9:16.
- A camera bubble in any shape and corner, and camera layouts (corner, side by side, camera only, screen only) that change on the timeline.
- Split, cut, trim, per-piece speed and volume, speed up typing, shortcuts as key caps, voice clean-up, music, undo, presets and projects that save as you edit.
- Export MP4, GIF or ProRes from 720p to 4K at up to 60 fps with motion blur, to a file or the clipboard. Exports and recordings show the same colors in every player and on every website.
- Polish a video… brings in a video you already have; phone videos filmed upright come in upright.
- Cancel stops FFmpeg at once and leaves no half-written file, and FFmpeg never keeps running after Toolyn closes. A video it can't open says why in plain words: damaged or still downloading, moved away, blocked by Windows, or on a drive that stopped answering.
- FFmpeg installed with Chocolatey or Scoop starts quickly, because Toolyn runs the real program instead of the package manager's launcher, and an FFmpeg that WinGet has just installed is found without restarting Toolyn. When FFmpeg is missing, Install FFmpeg installs it through Video Converter.
Redesign10 changes
- "Candy Case": a warm bone case (espresso in dark) with milk-acrylic cards, tool icons as glossy jelly in candy flavors (Bondi, bubblegum, lime, blueberry, lemon, tangerine, graphite, cocoa), duotone glyphs with rounded ends, a tomato gel button for the main action and pill-shaped controls. Drop zones are a cutting mat framed by crop marks; group labels are mono capitals ruled off by a hairline.
- The library opens with a greeting, the tools used last as keys, the search field and category chips, then a bento of cards: a drop card with a fragment of format keys, recent files, the week's savings with a bar per day, favorites, and a card per category listing all its tools with a small line drawing.
- Title bar tabs are pills, the one in front lit from below in its tool's flavor; merged tools switch modes with a pill segmented control and the action bar floats as an acrylic dock.
- Toolyn's own title bar replaces the sidebar and the Windows title bar: a library tab with the app's mark, a tab per open tool (Alt+1…9 switches), +, search, appearance, help and the window buttons. The app's icon shows once.
- Every tool page has the same shape: a header with mode tabs for merged tools, the work on the left (drop zones, file lists with live status, previews, editors), grouped settings on the right, and a pinned bar with the status and one primary action. The editors (View & Edit Images, PDF Editor, Audio Studio, Video Editor, Text Editor, Camera, Scan) have matching toolbars, canvases and panels.
- Live visuals: Speed Test dial and history, Keep Awake ring, Storage treemap, battery capacity chart, System Info tiles, a color picker with contrast checks.
- Tools that do one job in several ways are now one tool with tabs: Video Converter, Trim & Crop Video, Audio Converter, Image Converter, Blur & Redact Photos, Capture Web Page, Split PDF, Merge PDF, PDF Password, PDF Converter, Document Converter, Zip & Unzip Files, Word Counter, Encode & Decode, UUID Generator, Apps & Startup, Windows Tweaks, Display and Ask & Summarize (the Library section above has their tabs and old names). Every old name still finds and opens its tab, from search,
--tool, favorites and recent files. - Sign PDF, Redact PDF, Fill & Sign, Organize PDF, Annotate Screenshot, Redact Image and Record Audio open their editor directly instead of a separate page. Record Audio opens ready to record; nothing records until you press Record.
- A calmer library (search, category chips, recent tools and files, favorites, every category's tools) and a grouped command palette with key caps.
- CPU usage in System Info no longer reads above 100 % while the processor boosts.
Tools17 changes
- Tune-Up, a PC and network optimizer covering what Paragon Tweaking Utility offers, in the open: profiles (Gaming, Balanced, Laptop battery) that stage a before → after list, and pages for performance, latency, network, graphics, debloat and cleanup. Every tweak shows what it does, its state, whether it needs administrator rights and when it applies; nothing changes until Apply, the old values are recorded first (Undo per change, Restore everything), a restore point is offered before each batch, and one permission prompt covers the batch. Security features are never switched off.
- Tune-Up is easier to use: Overview starts with "What should this PC be best at?" and shows how many changes each profile makes; every setting is tagged with what it's good for and marked when it's recommended; a search finds any setting across the pages, filters show what's recommended, changed or waiting, and an Advanced switch keeps the expert settings out of the way. Profiles leave out power-saving changes on a laptop, setups you save can be switched back in one click, changes Windows put back after an update are flagged and applied again, and changes that need a restart offer one.
- Tune-Up adds what the Adamx Tweaking Utility offers, minus its security, closed-source and firmware-writing parts: full power while plugged in, memory compression and page combining, Fast Startup, keeping your drivers out of Windows Update, maintenance, Store and OneDrive background work, menu delay and audio ducking; timer coalescing, decoded processor time slices and USB device power; scaling heuristics, NetBIOS, receive buffers, Ethernet power modes, Wi-Fi roaming, protocol bindings, game traffic priority (DSCP) and adapter restarts; GPU preemption and NVIDIA and Radeon driver settings with frame-cap advice for G-SYNC and FreeSync; a Privacy page with eleven more settings and app permissions; more services; a Look page for dark mode, File Explorer and the right-click menu; cleaning Windows' own temporary files, Prefetch and update logs; emptying the Recycle Bin; BIOS advice with Restart into BIOS; and advice for the apps that hold games back.
- Storage Explorer also offers DirectX, NVIDIA and AMD shader caches.
- Battery Health finds the battery on laptops where one of Windows' battery queries fails (Surfaces among them), fills design capacity and cycles from Windows' battery report, lists each Bluetooth accessory once, and reads them all in seconds instead of a minute.
- Transcribe uses whichever installed FFmpeg can recognize speech, says so before you start when none can, and installs FFmpeg's full build with WinGet on request.
- System tools' PowerShell queries run from a file, so scripts with blocks over several lines no longer stop silently.
- About 70 new tools and jobs, in nine categories: Capture, Video, Audio, Images, PDF & Docs, Text & Speech, Files, System and Developer. Many are now jobs of a combined tool (see Library above), still found by their names.
- Video: Download Video (yt-dlp), Record Screen, Compress Video with size targets for Discord, WhatsApp and email, Trim, Merge, Mute, Resize, Crop & Rotate, Change Speed, Extract Frames, Video to GIF/WebP, Replace Audio, Burn In Subtitles (from a file or speech recognition) and Media Info.
- Audio: Clean Up Audio (noise, hum, loudness, silences), Trim Audio, Extract Audio and Record Audio.
- Images: Blur Faces, Beautify Screenshot, Remove Background, Compress, Resize and Rotate Images, lossless Remove Metadata, Color Picker with an on-screen eyedropper, Redact Image and Annotate Screenshot. Photos open with their camera rotation applied, and HEIC/AVIF open through Windows' codecs.
- PDF & Docs: Split PDF, Delete Pages, Extract Pages, Images to PDF, PDF to Images, Add and Remove Password, Word/PowerPoint/Excel/Markdown to PDF, and Sign PDF, Redact PDF, Fill & Sign and Organize PDF entries.

- Line icons for every tool.
--category <name>opens the library on a category.- Ctrl+Alt+Space (or the next free Ctrl+Alt shortcut when another app holds it) opens Toolyn's tool search from any app; choose it in the F1 sheet.
More in many tools15 changes
- Video: several links per download; subtitles at the top or on a box; GIFs at the original size or played once; pitch that follows the speed; stream copy when converting; N evenly spaced frames at a chosen width; exact-size resizing (fit, bars, crop or stretch); a crop drawn on a still of the video, with the saved size shown first; merges at 4K–480p; Replace Audio that loops or plays once under a quieter original; screen recordings at 1440p/1080p/720p with click highlights.
- Audio: hiss softening, fades when trimming, stream copy when extracting, sample rates and kept 24-bit depth; the recorder exports M4A and mono files and hands takes to Transcribe.
- Images: Annotate gains ellipses, lines, a highlighter and numbered steps; Redact gains a mosaic and Find & cover for faces, text, emails, phone numbers and links; Color Picker adds NSColor, C#, the nearest Tailwind color, image palettes and a contrast check against any color; Compress can save as JPG or WebP; Resize won't enlarge small pictures; Blur Faces keeps photos without faces.
- Docs: Scan Document straightens and cleans photos of paper and saves searchable PDFs; Redact PDF finds words, emails and phone numbers and strips metadata; Merge PDFs takes images and adds bookmarks; Extract Pages can save one PDF per page; Images to PDF chooses orientation and margins; Add Password sets print and copy permissions; PDF to Images saves into a folder; Markdown and Word to PDF choose paper, orientation and a style, with images; PowerPoint to PDF adds speaker notes; Web Page to PDF takes several addresses, saved pages and .url shortcuts, and can print one long page.
- Text & Speech: transcripts with timestamps; subtitle translation that keeps timings; Text to Speech highlights each word and picks a voice for the text's language; Word Counter adds unique words and bytes and understands abbreviations; Case Converter keeps words like iPhone and NASA.
- Files: QR Code reads codes from pictures; Find Duplicates compares both ends of files first; ZIP and 7Z (AES-256) passwords, password unzip, a contents preview and BZ2/XZ/ISO/CAB extraction; Batch Rename with regular expressions.
- System: Keep Awake only while plugged in and stops on low battery; Clean Keyboard can black out the screen; Dead Pixel Test explains each color and can flash stuck pixels; Startup Apps shows who signed each app; Mouse Fixes adds smooth scrolling; Uninstall App finds leftovers of apps already removed.
- Then: HEIC output (Convert and Compress Images, PDF to Images, Extract Frames) through Windows' HEIF extension; system sound in screen recordings, lined up with the picture; trim tools with a waveform, stills and draggable handles, playing the selection; Translate keeps the formatting of Word, OpenDocument, RTF and HTML files and translates many files at once; Clean Keyboard and Dead Pixel Test cover every display; QR Code reads barcodes, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec too; Rotate Images previews the turn; the crop still moves anywhere in the video; JWT Decoder explains every claim; Scan Document photographs pages with a webcam or a phone used as a camera.
- Developer: exact JSON numbers; Base64 line wrapping; cancelable file hashing; up to 10,000 UUIDs; world clocks and HTTP dates; side-by-side, folded and unified diffs; address lookup and Apple/Bing Maps links for coordinates.
- And the smaller options from each tool page: videos can drop their sound and encode on the graphics card; photo details and rotation survive conversion; Resize can stretch; ZIPs use AES and leave out Thumbs.db and __MACOSX; passwords are typed twice; searchable PDFs skip pages that already have text unless asked; downloads prefer H.264; transcripts save an SRT too. JSON keeps repeated keys and shows the faulty line; JWT takes Base64 secrets and shows encrypted tokens' headers; Base64 copies data URIs and names bad characters; Hash Generator hashes many files or folders, copies them in shasum format and compares pasted checksums however they're written; Timestamp Converter takes a chosen unit and turns dates into timestamps; Ctrl+R makes new UUIDs; Word Counter counts characters as you see them and copies its stats; Case Converter works line by line; Regex Tester copies matches; Clean Links cleans the clipboard; Coordinate Picker chooses decimals, measures on the map and looks up lists of places. Find Duplicates includes hidden files on request, keeps the shortest path or the copy in a chosen folder, and checks files again before removing them; Text to Speech pauses between paragraphs, reads a selection and saves M4A; Translate has From, Into and swap, with language codes; Media Info saves JSON; Ask a Document finds every match and reads scanned pages. View & Edit picks tools with single keys, straightens lines and squares boxes with Shift, adds drop shadows and captures an area to mark up; Keep Awake runs until a time of day; the speed test measures responsiveness, together or one after the other; Uninstall App finds the app for a dropped shortcut; Record Screen can hide the pointer and save MOV; the PDF Editor's Pages mode reverts, redacted pages stay searchable, and several signatures are kept.
- Fixed: with recent files, "Continue your work" no longer covers the third row of the home grid; the speed test's dial units no longer overlap their labels.
- Fixed, found with a real local model: Translate understands small models that drop the line numbers, and gives lines left untranslated one more try on their own; Text to Speech and Translate recognise the language of short sentences too.
- A second read of every mactoolbox.app tool page, live: View & Edit's marks stay editable (select with Move to drag, resize by a corner, recolor, edit text or delete) and blur and covers never hide other marks; Find & cover adds covers you can adjust; Redact Images covers faces, text, emails, phone numbers and links in a whole batch; Color Picker includes alpha; Trim has a playhead with Set start/end; Capture Text copies automatically and keeps a history; Find Duplicates can follow links and junctions; Zip & Unzip asks before extracting a likely zip bomb; JSON's Show selects the mistake; Hash Generator resumes a stopped batch; Coordinate Picker looks up addresses for a list of coordinates; Dead Pixel Test hides its tip with H; subtitles are saved as name.de.srt; Text to Speech, Summarize and Translate read scanned PDFs and join lines broken at the page edge.
- The parity table names the tests behind every tool; new ones cover filling and flattening forms, placing signatures, Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF without LibreOffice, Extract Text, Display Control and a real video download. Toolyn finds programs winget just installed without a restart, and Word Counter's Most used words are chips with counts.
- Toolyn's own look rather than mactoolbox's: each category has its own color, worn by its tab, card, tool tiles, tool headers and drop zones, and shown in the breadcrumb (Toolyn / Docs / Merge PDFs), which leads back to the category. The home opens on a drop target for any file, a "Your tools" card of favorites and most used tools, and one card per category with its main tools.
